The Jakarta expat profile
Jakarta expat life is overwhelmingly driven by work. The most common KITAS in the capital is the Working KITAS (E23), followed closely by the Investor KITAS and Golden Visa for PT PMA founders and senior executives. The ratio is almost the inverse of Bali, where digital nomads and retirees dominate. This shapes which categories we prepare most often for Jakarta clients.

Full guide ›Working KITAS in Jakarta: the sponsor factor
Every Working KITAS in Jakarta depends on the sponsoring company's paperwork. The biggest delays we see are not at immigration but on the sponsor side: an expired domicile certificate, a missing RPTKA, a lapsed DKPTKA payment, or a new PT PMA that has not yet cleared its minimum paid-up capital. We review the sponsor company's position first, flag any gaps, and coordinate with HR to fix them before lodging the VITAS.
For a prepared sponsor with a current RPTKA, a Jakarta Working KITAS typically runs 4 to 6 weeks from intake to card-in-hand. For a brand new PT PMA in formation, budget 8 to 12 weeks including the company setup steps.
Jakarta immigration offices
Jakarta has several Kanim (Kantor Imigrasi) offices depending on where you live:
- Kanim Jakarta Pusat, near Jalan Merdeka, serves Menteng, Gondangdia, Tanah Abang and Central Jakarta.
- Kanim Jakarta Selatan, off Jalan Warung Buncit Raya, serves Kuningan, Kemang, Pondok Indah, Senayan and the rest of South Jakarta (the largest expat area).
- Kanim Jakarta Utara serves North Jakarta including Pantai Indah Kapuk.
- Kanim Jakarta Barat serves West Jakarta and is the office of record for many industrial-zone sponsors.
- Kanim Jakarta Timur serves East Jakarta including Cipinang and Pulogadung.
Your assigned office is determined by the address on your VITAS application, which typically matches your residential address in Jakarta. Kitas VIP routes your case to the correct office automatically.
Living in Jakarta with a KITAS
A KITAS in Jakarta unlocks all the practical steps of expat life, many of which are more formalised than in Bali:
- Bank account. All major banks accept KITAS holders. BCA and Mandiri have the most English-friendly relationship managers in South Jakarta branches.
- Apartment leases. Kuningan, Sudirman, Kemang and Menteng are the main expat areas. Landlords generally want 12 month contracts paid quarterly or annually.
- International schools. JIS, BSJ, SIS, NJIS and ACG all require the parent to be on a valid KITAS. Dependent KITAS for children is typically registered alongside the parent's primary KITAS.
- Health insurance. Most multinationals provide a regional plan; for independent expats, Cigna, Allianz Care and AXA offer Indonesia-specific cover that is accepted at Siloam, RS Pondok Indah, SOS and other top Jakarta hospitals.
- Tax registration. Jakarta Working KITAS holders who become tax residents (183+ days) need to register for NPWP and submit an annual SPT. Your employer typically withholds monthly PPh 21.
Golden Visa for Jakarta founders
The Golden Visa is particularly popular in Jakarta because the business case is strongest there. Founders committing USD 350,000 in qualifying instruments get a 5 year permit; USD 700,000 gets a 10 year permit. Corporate directors of companies investing USD 25 million (5 year) or USD 50 million (10 year) can also qualify. Unlike the standard Investor KITAS, the Golden Visa is streamlined, family friendly, and does not require renewals during the multi-year block. See our full Investor and Golden Visa guide for thresholds and process.

Jakarta KITAS FAQ
Can my employer handle the Working KITAS without a concierge?
A well-resourced Indonesian employer with an experienced HR team can handle it in-house. In practice, most foreign professionals benefit from a concierge layer that coordinates between HR, the employee and immigration, reduces the document back-and-forth, and removes the applicant's personal time investment down to one biometric appointment.
Which Jakarta area should I live in for shortest commute to immigration?
Most expat clients live in South Jakarta (Kuningan, Kemang, Pondok Indah) and use Kanim Jakarta Selatan. Travel time to that office is usually 20 to 40 minutes in Jakarta traffic from those neighbourhoods.
Do I need to speak Bahasa Indonesia?
No. Indonesian is not required for any KITAS category, and Kitas VIP handles all Bahasa Indonesia paperwork and conversations on your behalf. English is widely spoken at Jakarta's major expat services and hospitals.
