Who the Family and Spouse KITAS is for
The E31 Family KITAS covers two distinct groups of applicants.
- Dependents of existing KITAS or KITAP holders. If your spouse holds a Working, Investor, Retirement or Golden Visa KITAS, you and your minor children can apply for a dependent KITAS tied to their primary permit. This is the most common route for expat families relocating to Jakarta or Bali.
- Foreign spouses of Indonesian citizens. If you are married to an Indonesian citizen, you can apply for a spouse KITAS sponsored by your Indonesian partner, without needing another visa category as a base.
Children of Indonesian citizens, and the elderly parents of Indonesian citizens, can also qualify under the Family KITAS as dependents in certain circumstances. The common thread is a clear, provable family relationship and an eligible sponsor.
Documents you will need
- Original marriage certificate, translated into Bahasa Indonesia and legalised where required. Indonesia does not recognise same-sex marriage for the purpose of the Family KITAS.
- Original birth certificates for any dependent children, translated and legalised.
- Passport with at least 18 months validity.
- Sponsor identity documents. For an Indonesian citizen sponsor this is the KTP (national ID card) and KK (family card). For a KITAS holder sponsor this is their own KITAS card, passport and proof of current address.
- Proof of shared address in Indonesia, through a lease agreement or a utility bill.
- Financial support statement from the sponsor, typically accompanied by a recent bank statement.
- Health insurance for the applicant covering the full duration of stay.
How long the Family KITAS lasts
The E31 Family KITAS is normally issued for the same duration as the primary KITAS it is tied to. If the primary visa holder has a 1 year Working KITAS, the dependent KITAS is also 1 year. If the primary holder has a 5 year Golden Visa, the dependent KITAS runs alongside for 5 years. Spouses of Indonesian citizens typically receive 1 year or 2 year permits initially, with longer extensions available after the first renewal cycle.
After 2 years of legal marriage, foreign spouses of Indonesian citizens generally become eligible for KITAP (Permanent Stay Permit), which is valid for 5 years at a time and much easier to renew. For other dependents, KITAP eligibility is usually available after 3 consecutive years of Family KITAS.
Can you work on a Family KITAS?
No. The Family KITAS does not grant the right to work in Indonesia. If you want to take employment, the correct route is a separate Working KITAS sponsored by your Indonesian employer, or opening your own PT PMA and combining it with an Investor KITAS or a Working KITAS under your own company.
Many foreign spouses of Indonesian citizens choose to open a PT PMA after marriage, which unlocks the ability to run a business in Indonesia legally. This is a common structure for hospitality entrepreneurs in Bali and creative businesses in Jakarta.
Applying from abroad versus in Indonesia
You can apply for a Family KITAS from outside Indonesia, attached to an already approved primary KITAS, or from inside Indonesia if you arrived together on short term visas. The flow is the same either way: the sponsor's eligibility is confirmed, the VITAS is lodged online, the approval telex is issued, and the in-country conversion happens at the local immigration office within 30 days of arrival. Kitas VIP handles both scenarios and keeps family cases bundled to save fees.
How Kitas VIP handles your Family KITAS
Family cases are often more document heavy than single applicant cases because of marriage and birth certificate legalisation. We review every document, identify gaps early and coordinate with Indonesian notaries for translation and legalisation when needed. We also bundle primary and dependent applications in one file so the timelines stay aligned and the cost is lower than applying separately.
Family and Spouse KITAS FAQ
Do I need to be married to an Indonesian citizen to use the Family KITAS?
No. The Family KITAS also covers dependents of foreign KITAS or KITAP holders. Many expat families in Indonesia use this route, with one spouse on a Working or Investor KITAS and the partner plus children on dependent KITAS.
How long does marriage legalisation take?
Legalising a foreign marriage certificate for use in Indonesia typically takes 1 to 3 weeks depending on your home country's apostille process and the Indonesian embassy workload. Kitas VIP flags this at intake so you start the legalisation early.
Can I travel in and out of Indonesia on a Family KITAS?
Yes. Family KITAS holders receive a MERP multiple exit re-entry permit that allows unlimited travel in and out of Indonesia for the validity of the KITAS.
