Why Canggu works for remote workers
Canggu is a coastal village at the northwest edge of Bali's main expat belt, between Seminyak and Tanah Lot. Over the last few years it has matured from a surf destination into a genuine remote-work hub. Internet infrastructure has improved dramatically, coworking spaces have multiplied, and the local services industry now caters specifically to long-term remote workers. Unlike a tourist area that tolerates laptops, Canggu is genuinely built for people doing 40 hours a week of focused work while living abroad.
The three main remote-work clusters are Batu Bolong (surf plus cafes), Berawa (coworking and international schools) and Pererenan (quieter, residential). Most digital nomads end up in one of these three based on whether they prioritise social life, work focus, or peace and quiet.
The Digital Nomad KITAS in Canggu: quick checklist
- Annual income of USD 60,000 or more from foreign sources, documented by tax returns or employer letters.
- Employer or clients located outside Indonesia, with no Indonesian operating presence.
- Bank balance of USD 2,000 or more for the three months before application.
- Passport valid for 18 months with three blank pages.
- No intention to earn Indonesian income. The visa is strictly for work performed for foreign employers or clients.
If that matches your situation, you qualify. The full E33G process is covered in our Digital Nomad KITAS guide. This page focuses on the Canggu-specific context.
Internet and coworking
Canggu runs on Biznet, Indihome and Iconnet fibre. Most dedicated long-term villas now include fibre as standard, with typical speeds of 100 to 500 Mbps down and 50 to 100 Mbps up. The major coworking spaces (Tropical Nomad, Dojo Bali, Outpost, Biliq) offer higher-tier connections with redundant backup lines, meeting rooms and international member communities. If your work depends on video calls or large file uploads, a dedicated coworking membership is worth the USD 100 to 200 per month for the peace of mind and reliability.
Villa rentals on a KITAS
Once your KITAS is issued, you can sign 12 month or longer villa leases in your own name. The Canggu long-term rental market typically operates on annual contracts with the full year paid up front, which is normal for Bali and not a reason to worry. Expect USD 1,200 to 2,500 per month for a modern 2 bedroom villa with private pool, depending on location and season. Your landlord notifies the local banjar (village administration) when you move in, which is standard procedure for foreign tenants.
Banking, SIM card and driving
- Bank account. BCA and Mandiri accept KITAS holders. Open at the Canggu branch with your KITAS card, passport, and a utility bill or rental contract.
- SIM card. Telkomsel, XL and Smartfren all offer prepaid data plans with unlimited 4G and 5G in Canggu. Register your SIM with your KITAS and passport to avoid auto-blocking.
- Scooter licence. Most expats rent a scooter. Indonesian law requires an International Driving Permit (IDP) or a local SIM C. As a KITAS holder you can apply for the local SIM at the Denpasar police station.
The Denpasar immigration office for Canggu residents
Canggu is in Badung Regency, which reports to Kanim Kelas I TPI Denpasar for KITAS purposes. When Kitas VIP books your biometric appointment after VITAS approval, the address you use on your application determines that the case is handled at the Denpasar office on Jalan D.I. Panjaitan, Renon. The drive from Canggu is typically 60 to 90 minutes depending on traffic. We recommend booking a morning slot so the day stays manageable.
Tax status in Canggu
The most common question from digital nomads is whether they become Indonesian tax residents. The rule is straightforward: if you are present in Indonesia for more than 183 days in any 12 month window, you are classified as a tax resident. E33G holders whose income comes entirely from foreign sources and whose employer has no Indonesian presence are generally not subject to Indonesian tax on that foreign income in practice, under the government's position on the remote worker visa. Because this area depends on specific facts (treaty status, foreign domicile, types of income), we strongly recommend a qualified Indonesian tax adviser for your case. Kitas VIP can introduce you to trusted partners.
